Victorian Dance Class
Our ball prompter, Miss Tabitha, (a.k.a. Sharon Guli of River Crossing, Inc.) will teach you some of the basics of the types of dances to be offered at Saturday's Grand Victorian Ball. This will be a good refresher for those familiar with Victorian dancing and will reassure those new to this elegant and enjoyable pastime that is is not difficult. Any attire is suitable but wear shoes or boots that are comfortable.
Miss Tabitha brings to each dance floor a pleasant and lively mix of both the old and the new -- historically-correct vintage pieces, simplified versions that are easier to learn, and a few contemporary selections that maintain the flavor and feel of Victorian times. While preserving this piece of the past, she keeps things relaxed with light banter, an eagerness to encourage the novice, and a clear, easy way of explaining the steps so all can understand and participate. During breaks in the music, she shares entertaining information on the history of the dances and the etiquette of this bygone era.
Now you, too, can re-capture the feel of "days gone by" when you join Miss Tabitha as she teaches dances such as the Virginia Reel, the Gie Gordon, square dances and quadrilles, and the Spanish Waltz! She has been researching and teaching these old-time dances for over 18 years, and she specializes in adapting historic dances for modern-day folks.
Dance to toe-tapping music as you join your neighbors and meet new friends. All dances will be taught, and no partner or previous experience is necessary. Enjoy the fun of stepping back in time to when our ancestors celebrated after a hard day's work by dancing the night away. You may attend in costume or in regular casual street clothes – this is a practice! All 12 years or older are welcome.
