Greenmount Cemetery Tour: "Early Durango Movers & Shakers"

As you can see from the great photos from the 2011 tour, the beautiful Greenmount Cemetery in Durango is a perfect venue to honor pioneers buried there, as well as provide an educational and entertaining activity for our guests.

For 2012, we will again return to Greenmount, home to a substantial deer population, to reenact the lives of some of Durango's early influential citizens. You will meet Mr. and Mrs. Camp, often considered the First Family of Durango, and hear of the accomplishments of both, as well as a bit of a shady legend about their son. Joining the Camps will be Thomas Rockwood, for whom the train stop and settlement of Rockwood, Colorado, are named and a number of other early "movers & shakers" of the area.

For several years now Durango public officials, including the Mayor, City Manager and City Council members, have served as cemetery reenactors and have done an excellent job of both giving historical information and injecting humor and personality into their talks. Join them again in 2012!

There is no charge for the tour, but donations will be gratefully accepted and will support the Animas Museum/La Plata County Historical Society. The route of the tour involves walking on paths and grass, with some gentle hills. Nothing is highly strenous. Bring drinking water.
